In less dramatic contexts, for de-clawed cats kept indoors (and robbed of all outdoor pleasures), even the simple act of climbing up on to a chair or a window-ledge may prove hazardous.
Without the pinpoint contact of the tips of the claws and the animals may find themselves slipping and crashing to the ground.
The expression of confusion observed on the faces of such cats as they pick themselves up is in itself sufficient to turn any cat-lover against the idea of claw-removal.
In addition to destroying the animal’s ability to groom, climb, defend itself against rivals and protect itself from enemies and the operation of de-clawing also eliminates the cat’s ability to hunt.
This may not be important for a well-fed family pet, but if ever such a cat were to find itself lost or homeless it would rapidly die of starvation.
The vital grab at a mouse with sharp claws extended would become a useless gesture.
In short, a de-clawed cat is a crippled, mutilated cat and no excuse can justify the operation.
Despite this, many pet cats are carried off to the vet by exasperated owners for this type of “convenience surgery”.
The operation, although nearly always refused by vets in Britain, has become so common in certain countries that it even has an official name. It is called onyx-ectomy .
Using an old Greek name for it somehow makes it seem more respectable.
The literal translation of onyxectomy, however, is simply “nail-cutting-out” and that is what vets are doing, even though they may not like to be reminded of the fact when they record their day’s work.
It has been argued by some cat experts that any vet performing this convenience operation should be prosecuted for cruelty to animals, but this is unfair to them.
They may well be faced with owners who demand that the operation be done, with the only alternative that their pet cat be destroyed.
Given such a choice, and a perfectly healthy cat, it is hard to blame the vet for selecting the lesser of two evils. If there is any prosecution, it should be of the owner rather than the vet.
The reason for the popularity of the de-clawing operation in recent years has been the concern of (usually wealthy) owners for their soft furnishings.
Valuable chair fabrics, curtains, cushions and other materials are often found scratched and torn and tattered as a result of the family cat’s claw-sharpening activities around the house.
This is especially troublesome in urban homes, where the animals have little access to wooden posts or trees.
And the addition of commercially manufactured “scratching-posts” to the indoor furniture rarely seems to solve the problem.
There are only three solutions: the owners can decide that the pleasure of having a cat in the home is greater than the distress of living with scratched furniture, or some kind of covering that cats hate to scratch has to be put over the sides of the furniture, or the cats have to be trained not to strop the furniture with their claws. This last alternative is a possibility, but it is by no means easy. Shouting at cats or hitting them has little effect.
It is best to take a leaf out of the mother cat’s book.

Robertson did not hesitate, and dived overboard and swam out to the dinghy which he succeeded in getting back to the fishing boat for the crew to get off.
By his quick thinking and brave action, Robertson saved the lives of five men, and the Stanhope Gold Medal for the Year 1957 was awarded to him. Bronze Medal: Rescue at Porthtowan
On 25th July 1898, an Edwin Bailey was bathing on the beach at Porthtowan, Cornwall when he was caught by a strong current and swept out to sea.
One other man, a Henry W. Harris, a railway official, went to his rescue, and succeeded in reaching the drowning swimmer, but got into difficulties himself and could not bring the other to the shore.
It was then that James John Weeble, a deaf man from Redruth, came upon the scene, and swam out fully-clothed, and succeeded in dragging both men back to the beach.
James J. Weeble was awarded the Royal Humane Society’s Bronze Medal on 15th August 1898 for this gallant rescue. James J. Weeble died at Plymouth aged 87 on 4th April 1961.
Bronze Medal: Rescue from the River Avon
Thomas Albert Biggs, a born-deaf man employed as a coachman at Bristol, was out on bail on 13 charges of bicycle theft on 3rd June 1905 when he came upon a drama in the River Avon at a point where the river was over twenty feet deep and dangerous.
A man named Charles Lloyd had fallen into the river, and was in severe difficulties.
Another man, Walter Latham, had gone in to try and save Lloyd but got into difficulty himself. Both men were in danger of being drowned when Thomas Biggs came upon the scene.
Biggs immediately went to the rescue, and pulled both men to the shore and successfully saving their lives.
Biggs was awarded the Royal Humane Society’s Bronze Medal the day before he was sentenced to nine months imprisonment on the charges of stealing bicycles and the judge saying that sentence would have been more severe but for his brave deed.
Testimonials on Vellum; Testimonials on Parchment; Certificates of Recommendation
The Royal Humane Society have a number of other awards where though the deed did not warrant a medal and some recognition was appropriate, and for this and they issue in descending order of importance, Testimonials on Vellum, Testimonials on Parchment and Certificates of Recommendation.
Testimonials on Vellum were awarded to James Roxburgh, aged 24, and Joseph Stephens, aged 26, for the rescue of a six-year-old from the River Thames at Blackfriars on 25th August 1923; John Connor, aged 60, and John Burton, aged 48, for the rescue of a man attempting suicide in the flooded River Aire at Leeds on 25th January 1925.
Testimonials on Parchment were awarded to John Hellier, a painter, for the rescue of a seven-year-old girl from the Union Canal at Edinburgh on 5th June 1914; Charles Harwood, aged 18, for rescuing a schoolboy of six from a canal at Leeds on 7th August 1924; Jack Kellett, aged 15, for the rescue of a schoolboy aged 4 from a canal at Leeds on 22nd July 1929; Derek Wylde for the rescue of a little girl from the River Ouse at Bedford on 10th August 1966.
Certificates of Recommendation were awarded to Thomas Mundy, aged 60, for the rescue of a boy aged 3 from a mill lode at Hull on 4th April 1906; Charles Pain in 1920 for saving a woman attempting suicide, and to Howard Swinbourne, aged 34, for saving a suicidal woman from the River Trent at Nottingham on 20th May 1985. Silver Medals: Royal Cross School Fire
In Chapter 7, it was mentioned that two schoolboys, John Jackson and Joseph Dalton of the Royal Cross School, Preston, were awarded silver medals for gallantry during the fire at this school in 1905.

TEOTIHUACAN and the great pre-Hispanic city in the Valley of Mexico, dominated political, economic and cultural life in Mesoamerica for some seven centuries until about AD 700.
Its influence even reached Maya centres in the Yucatan Peninsula, Guatemala and Belize and neighbouring parts of Honduras and El Salvador.
This was when the Maya civilisation was at its height, during what archaeologists call the Classic period.
Finds of pottery, obsidian tools and religious monuments testify to Teotihuacan’s widespread influence on Classic Maya life.
Now comes a suggestion that the city also had control over land use outside its environs, not in this case in the Maya area, but in wetlands near the modern port of Veracruz, west of the Yucatan Peninsula.
A geographer, Alfred Siemens of the University of British Columbia, has found rectilinear remains of canals and planting platforms (raised fields) in central Veracruz, which, he claims, are distinctly oriented about 1 5o east of north (American Antiquity , vol 48. p 85).
This orientation, Siemens suggests, was imposed from Teotihuacan where it had special astronomical and ritual significance.
There the city’s builders laid out all the streets and the ceremonial centres and most of the other buildings along a precise rectangular grid aligned with the main ceremonial road known as the Avenue of the Dead, which archaeologists have discovered, was oriented 155o east of north. On the east side of the Avenue was the large Pyramid of the Sun.
The objective of this special orientation, and similar arrangements in several other Mesoamerican cities, were the points on the horizon where the Sun rose and set on the day it passed directly overhead.
On precisely the same day each year the star cluster Pleiades also first became visible in the dawn sky.
To the people of Teotihuacan these celestial events signalled the onset of rains and the time for crop planting and probably other important ceremonies.
The significance of the orientation of fields in Central Veracruz is still unknown.
There is no evidence to suggest that such orientation has the same religious significance as they did for Teotihuacan.
The “floating” gardens or chinampas in the lake region just south of modern Mexico City were also oriented in a similar way when they were first built, probably in Teotihuacan times, and this orientation can still be seen in surviving examples.
These highly productive farm plots were the economic foundation for the great Aztec Empire and most likely also for the earlier state of Teotihuacan.
They are long, narrow strips of land surrounded on at least three sides by canals.
Strong central control would have been needed for their successful operation on the scale archaeologists envisage.
Properly looked after they can produce several crops a year and remain fertile for centuries without needing a fallow period.
Some chinampas are still in operation and experimental models are being built in other parts of Mexico and elsewhere to assess the productivity of this method of agriculture in swamplands today.
The chinampas of central Mexico represent a most sophisticated form of wetland agriculture and the Veracruz raised fields do not seem to have been as elaborately built.
Siemens has no dates yet for them but their orientation certainly suggests they were built during the first centuries AD.
During Teotihuaca/n times in the Veracruz wetlands there may have been occasional impounding of swamp water late in the dry season but perhaps not the sustained maintenance of water levels as happened in the chinampas .
The fields near the margins of the swamp area were probably kept drained by the building of a network of canals: those towards the centre may have been built up above flood level with muck transferred from the canal bottoms.

The scholarly explanation is that the three words are past participles meaning “numbered”, “weighed” and in the case of Upharsin both “divided”and “Persians.”
It all sounds a bit rich to me, and although Belshazzar swallowed it, Handel and his librettist Charles Jennens clearly took the view that it was not one of the moments from the Belshazzar story that should be dwelt upon or scrutinised to any serious degree.
Jennens drew his libretto from three books of the Old Testament as well as histories of Xenophon and Heroditus.
This wide range of reference helps to make Belshazzar one of Jennens’s richest libretti and, from a musical point of view, one of handel’s most unpredictable and enthralling Oratorios.
If the sound balance on this Archiv recording can seem at times a little unyielding, it is amply repayed by a freshness and dramatic spontaneity from a team of soloists who only have to have their names on the cover for us to be assured of the recording’s qualities.
Trevor Pinnock ensures that the music keeps moving, and never allows us to forget that it conveys the emotional meaning of the words and is not, as some interpreters would have us believe, detached from all relevance except the purity of its own sound.
It is quite astonishing in view of Handel’s vast output quite what a consistent and imaginative composer he was. Belshazzar is unsurprisingly no exception.
With melodies, accompaniment figuration, choruses and arias on a par with Handel’s very best, Archiv has produced a recording to be strongly recommended and much enjoyed. [AW]
Messiah
RODGERS, JONES, ROBSON, LANGRIDGE, TERFEL, COLLEGIUM MUSICUM 90/HICKOX
Yet another Messiah on “early” instruments, conspiring no doubt to send retailers completely mad in their attempts to decide which of the many available readings they should plump for.
There are three particular versions which all shops should carry if they have the space: Eliot Gardiner on Philips, Hogwood on l’Oiseau Lyre, and McGegan on Harmonia Mundi. They each have something special about them.
The Philips set is probably the best overall and though it comes on three CDs, and is therefore expensive, Hogwood’s is on two CDs and has Emma Kirkby terrifying the living daylights out of her listeners, while Nicholas McGegan provides the collector with an opportunity to hear all of Handel’s cuts and revisions in a series of cunningly prepared appendices.
Without a moment’s further hesitation, we must now add this new Chandos recording to the pile of exceptional Messiahs .
It comes on two CDs which makes it cheaper than either the Philips or Harmonia Mundi sets, and has a choir in Collegium Musicum 90 who for clarity of diction, and intense musicality and surpass all other versions with the exception of Eliot Gardiner’s Monteverdi Choir.

Secondly, it will develop intellectual structures in a young mind that are based on a feeling for, or an intuitive grasp of mathematical concepts. Classically, learning LOGO begins with a child’s own sense of space. “Walk in a square” and someone asks.
The child then has to work out how many paces to each side and where to turn through 90o. The next stage is to introduce the Turtle.
This is a hemispherical and transparent drawing machine about 10 cm in diameter.
It is controlled by a computer keyboard and it understands LOGO’s simple commands.
The child types instructions like “FORWARD 50″ and “RIGHT 90″and Turtle draws a square. The analysis needed is the same as that used to walk in a square. Now the child sits at the computer screen.
There is a small triangle in the centre.
She types “FORWARD 50″ and the triangle leaps 50 units along the x -axis. The square is completed and she has been introduced to Turtle Graphics. Having discovered how to draw a square she types: TO ZX SQUARE. The word TO tells the machine it is about to get an instruction. The child then types four times : FORWARD 50; RIGHT 90; followed by END.
The computer now responds to the command SQUARE by drawing a square 50 x 50 units. Soon she will want to draw squares with different length sides. This is easy, because she can edit her original definition as TO SQUARE SIDE.

As Valère, Alex Hardy exhibits a Basil Fawlty brand of obsequious contempt for his master.
But Tom Courtenay rivets the attention and elicits a certain sympathy as he bemoans the loss of his cash box ” despite his paranoid security measures. “Oh my poor dear money…
I have lost my consolation, my joy, I can’t live without you.”
No one is safe from suspicion ” let alone the audience on whom he turns with an accusatory stare. “You all look highly suspicious to me.”
Loss of his money is like evisceration.
It is no matter to him that he loses his hold over his children and his erstwhile fiancée.
The morals and ethics are obvious and the comedy more subtle and highly entertaining. Worth seeing for Courtenay alone.
Sandy Baker
Tom Courtenay as The Miser, with his cook, Colin Prockter.
Jane Rossington, best known as Jill in Crossroads is appearing at the Redgrave Theatre, Farnham, from April 1st in Don’t Rock the Boat . A swingin’ sixties Saturday night remembered
THERE can be few musicals that so vividly evoke the era they portray as A Slice of Saturday Night, a 60s skit on teenage passions set in Eric “Rubberlegs” De Vene’s Club A Go-Go.

The row that followed the announcement of a programme of drilling to find a suitable site for burying high-level waste ” and resulted in the programme being called off two years ago ” has led NIREX to abandon any hope of drilling to find the best geological formation for the intermediate waste. Instead, a desk study will have to suffice.
The final decision on where to apply for planning permission to build is certain to be taken on political grounds. NIREX will opt for the place where they are least likely to meet opposition.
This political dimension may make the massive civil engineering work even more hazardous.
The design study notes: “Unfortunately, with only limited geological information available and in the absence of normal site-investigation data, it is prudent to consider construction in what may prove to be adverse as well as favourable conditions,”
Rocks that should prove suitable for taking the highly-active waste are mudstones and sandstones in coastal areas, where the sand is saturated with salt-water and says the study.
Suitable sandstones are found along the Lancashire and Cumbrian coasts; either side of the Severn estuary; in Lyme Bay, Dorset; in north-east Scotland and the Orkneys; in Devon and in parts of north-east England and south Wales.
Suitable hard argillaceous rocks ” mudstones and shales ” are found in Wales, Devon and the Lake District and the southern uplands of Scotland and says the report. For these rocks there is no need for a coastal site.
A third idea and to put waste in existing man-made caverns in chalk or limestone, is still being assessed.
Such caverns are available in Kent, Wiltshire, Cleveland, Humberside and Lincolnshire, The UKAEA’s report proposes that special trains with 1012 wagons, each loaded with flasks containing drums of waste will travel on public railways between the Sellafield reprocessing plant and the waste dumps, which could be up to 400 km away. It envisages 595 train journeys each year ” more than 800 journeys in all.
British Rail’s technical centre in Derby is already at work designing wagons for the trains.
Before beginning its travels all the waste will be mixed with bitumen or concrete and sealed in 0.5 cu.m drums. The report says that the waste may start being moved from Sellafield in 1988.
But, even if work on the deep-disposal site gets under way this year and there is “virtually no possibility of having the repository available before 1997.”
So the plan is for the waste with the high-alpha content to be put in an interim store. The store will cost more than £20 million.
The store will be quite separate from that planned by the Central Electricity Generating Board to house spent nuclear fuel before it is reprocessed.
But, in both cases and the need for and expense of the stores arises from the nuclear industry’s failure to plan ahead for getting rid of its waste.
The report admits to several outstanding questions about the long-term safety of the deep-disposal dumps.
The absence of data from boreholes on particular sites means that “the long-term radiological consequences arising from activity transport by circulating groundwater have not been assessed”.
And it says: “A more comprehensive investigation” is needed to find out whether concrete can contain the radioactivity for 3000 years while the radioactivity decays. Windscale report angers nuclear industry
THE publication last week of the National Radiological Protection Board’s assessment that some 260 people may have caught cancer of the thyroid as a result of a fire at the Windscale plutonium pile in 1957 has been greeted with anger by the British nuclear industry.
The report undermines the industry’s often-repeated assertion that nobody has been killed by the British nuclear programme.
More than that, it threatens the industry’s preferred method of assessing risk and calls into question the adequacy of the emergency measures that would be adopted after an accident.
At the time of the fire, British Nuclear Fuels Ltd, which runs Windscale, used its own estimates of the doses of iodine-131 and the most dangerous radio-isotope released during the fire, on individuals to claim that nobody was at risk.

“In theory,” said Emery, “defence costs might fall once there’s a proper strategic airfield.
But building one is going to cost an enormous amount, and produce an asset which we will not find it easy to leave.
The original airstrip was designed only for short nights to the mainland in the days when the Foreign Office was encouraging the seduction of the Falklands by Argentina.”
It was then explained that the present airstrip was improvised by the engineers as a front-line RAF base to take the Hercules and the slow transport which drones between Ascension Island and Stanley at £250000 per trip. The big Tristars, crucial to large scale reinforcement just cannot get in. General Thorne felt that he would rather defend one airport than two. If he had two, his force level would inevitably have to go up.
Three days after the riveting Panorama and the £350 million had been upped to £880 million by the Daily Express on the assumption that it would be built by contractors.
(Or downed to £110 million if built by Sappers, another 1000 of whom would have to be recruited.) I must call a halt here to brain-numbing estimates of expenditure.
Estimate, instead and the sheer physical task that is being contemplated: to build a “Stansted at Stanley” would be to do something that has never been done before in the whole of history.
Never has anyone even considered building an international airport, moving all the necessary supplies over a distance of 13 000 kilometres between hemispheres.
Now we are asked to consider this proposition in the face of local opposition which ranges from sullen resentment to armed threat ” said local opposition being only some 25 supersonic minutes away for that bogeyman of the south Atlantic airways and the Super Etendard jet fighter.
I would so like to be the proverbial fly on the wall at those Cabinet subcommittees which are currently engaged on passing judgement on so far-fetched a proposition.
Have they any notion as they sit around Downing street of the horrendous costs involved for a nation that finds difficulty in paying its water workers properly? What kind of technical briefing are they being offered?
Are they told, for example and that it is near impossible to build a sound airstrip for heavy transport jets in conditions of wicked cold and chilling damp and such as the Falklands suffer for seven months of the year?
Do they understand that for years to come, our treasure is to be poured into maintaining round-the-clock, full-alert, protection of the airstrip works, at a time when we are seriously discussing the future of student loans, and putting the millstone of debt round the necks of our students in higher education? There are a number of high technology problems that need answering.

In at least one case there was a deliberate policy decision not to involve the University.
This was in Kenya where the Ministry of Education’s special centres in English, mathematics and science were brought together into a Curriculum Development Centre in 1966 and the whole amalgamated with the Kenya Institute of Education, a non-university body which co-ordinated standards in teacher education in 1968.
Other important curriculum development centres were set up in Ghana (1967) and Zambia (1970).
In Uganda a centre set up in 1973 assumed control of many of the functions originally undertaken by the Institute. Which Is most Important?
Deborah is an excellent teacher.
If she is withdrawn from school for two years to help produce a new language course eighty children will lose out. What a pity!
But then half a million children will benefit.
The arithmetic seems to be very clear.
Yet how many times have Deborah or her brothers and sisters been refused secondment on the ground that they could not be spared either because “there was no money” or because Peter, who could very thankfully be released, was sent off instead.
Because the efficiency of a curriculum development centre is a direct concern of the Ministry and there would appear to be a much greater probability that the very considerable staffing demands which curriculum development makes should be recognised.
Bodies such as the Kenya Institute of Education with some thirty full-time professional staff and the Zambia Curriculum Development Centre with about forty, would claim, probably rightly and that they were still understaffed and often experience difficulty in securing the release of the most able teachers from schools and colleges, but the provision made for them is certainly more realistic than that available in University Institutes like those in Ahmadu Bello or Sierra Leone.
A Ministry Centre has also the opportunity to establish far closer links with the means and process of implementation especially in regard to publishing and distribution of materials and trial, follow up and evaluation in schools.
Such opportunities are obviously present in Kenya and Zambia though they do not appear always to work out in practice, one reason in Kenya being that centre personnel are continually called on to perform routine professional jobs such as practical examinations for final year college students.
The fact that this happens so widely and the fact that in relation to the volume and importance of the work they have to do, curriculum centres are still understaffed and under-funded indicates that there still exists a rather strange ordering of educational priorities. (3) CURRICULUM UNITS WITHIN MINISTRIES
But even a Ministry Curriculum Development Centre can find itself in some sense isolated from the main machinery of educational planning and administration and thus acquire a certain sense of unreality. The mere physical separation of personnel can be a real source of frustration.
Until 1977 the Secretary of Nigeria’s Educational Research Council had to battle his way through the appalling Lagos traffic from Apapa to Lagos Island if he wanted to consult with his Permanent Secretary or Chief Federal Adviser.
The Director of Swaziland’s Curriculum Research and Development Unit at Manzini must motor miles to Mbabane if he wants to see the Chief Education Officer.

Vial thus lost his annuity from Flesseille, and he was deprived of his other appointments.
His patrimonial estate (if it ever existed) was confiscated because, as he claimed, he was now an émigré ‘, having failed to return to France in the prescribed period.
On his return to England, Vial was available to guide the dissection of the racehorse Eclipse, obtaining (in true Vial fashion) many noble and zealous patrons in the process, including Lords Grosvenor, Morton and Belgrave.
This was probably the most famous and least useful dissection of a horse ever undertaken.
The following account is largely drawn from Sherwin Hall’s article in Veterinary History (Summer 1984).
Bred by the Duke of Cumberland (17211765) at Windsor, by Marske (a third generation descendant of the Darley Arabian) out of Spilette (a granddaughter of the Godolphin Barb on the sire’s side) Eclipse was born on the day of a solar eclipse, 1 April 1764.
After the death of the “Butcher” Duke on 31 October 1765 and the stud was sold and the yearling Eclipse was bought by a Leadenhall merchant and grazier, one Wildman, for 75 guineas. Eclipse’s first race was a Fifty Guinea Plate at Epsom in May 1769.
In 18 races, Eclipse was “first and the rest nowhere”, being either unbeaten, or walking over.
Eclipse, put to stud in 1770, was now owned by Denis O’Kelly of Canons, Edgware, who had bought a half-share for 650 guineas after Eclipse’s second race at Ascot in 1769, buying the other half for 1100 guineas.
O’Kelly died in 1787, and Eclipse died of a “violent colic” 14 months later, at 7 pm on 27 February 1789.
Vial was invited to supervise the autopsy, which was performed (whether in part or as a whole is not clear) by Edmund Bond (later to be the first pupil to obtain a certificate from the medical examining committee of the London Veterinary College in 1794). Also present were Bracy Clark and his elder brother, Henry.
Bracy Clark (17711862) was the brilliant son of a Quaker living in Chipping Norton.
Leaving school at the age of 14 to study medicine, he was apprenticed to a surgeon in Worcester.
His elder brother, Henry, urged Bracy to go to the London College, which Bracy entered in 1792, gaining his certificate in 1794. He had been elected a fellow of the Linnean Society in 1793.
After a two-year tour of the Continent, he returned to England in 1799 and started a veterinary practice at 17 Giltspur Street, mainly among brewery horses and those of a similar type.
He devised a set of heavy draft horse casting hobbles which are now outmoded but still bear his name. Bracy Clark was a prolific writer.
One critic said that no man, perhaps, ever wrote so learnedly or so much and to so little purpose.
His hobbies were horse-shoeing and cricket”he established the first cricket club in Worcester.
When he retired from practice, probably in 1828, he and others produced a veterinary periodical called the Farrier and Naturalist , which was devoted to attacks on Professor Coleman, and ran for three years. He was elected vice-president of the Royal College in 1857.
Clark’s paternal grandmother, Margaret Bracy, was the last representative of a family long settled in Long Compton in Warwickshire.
A family of cow doctors worked in this region for over three centuries; this family is now represented by Dr John Walker, who has a veterinary practice in Hook Norton, near Long Compton.
